India skipper Shubman Gill was quite vocal about the statement made by former cricket player Sanjay Manjrekar that one-day cricket is the “easiest format” of international cricket. which was apparently a jab at Virat Kohli for choosing to play 50-over formats after retiring from the test format.
Before the first ODI between India and New Zealand in Vadodara, Gill was asked if the ODI is the easiest format of International cricket. The Indian Test and ODI Skipper strongly disagreed with the statement, saying, “I don’t think any format is easy.” He emphasised how India has not won the ODI World Cup since 2011, adding that if ODIs were simple, India would have won the tournament more often.
Gill’s reaction was perceived to be an indirect dig at Manjrekar’s statement, in defence of the challenge of playing ODIs as well as in appreciation of the hard work which needs to be accomplished in different forms of cricket.
“Do you think ODI is the easiest of the three formats? I ask because a former cricketer has said so,” a reporter asked Shubman Gill.
“I don’t think any format is easy. The Indian cricket team hasn’t won a World Cup since 2011, so if it was that easy, we would be winning the World Cup every second edition,” Gill replied.
