Russell is set to retire after his next T20I series in Sabina Park. The T20 World Cup is less than 7 months away, and two major players of the West Indies, Nicholas Pooran, have retired from international cricket, and Andre Russell will also retire after his next T20 match. West Indies may get into big trouble in the absence of the two key players. Some people are circulating the reason that some boards are not rich enough to pay a good salary to a player. It is mandatory to represent your nation over the league stage matches and players are getting good income from different league matches across the world.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, his family raised Andre Russell in a cricket-rich environment. Russell made his first-class debut at the age of 19 for Jamaica in 2007. He has been an exceptional allrounder of West Indies after Chris Gayle. With his electrifying batting, fast medium bowling and quick reflexes in fielding, he quickly earned his name in cricket with his fearless nature.

International Cricket Debut of Andre Russell

Russell made his international cricket debut in Test cricket in 2010 against Sri Lanka. The only Test match he has ever played in his career. In his debut, he scored 2 runs and took the crucial wicket of Tillakaratne Dilshan.

By the time Russell was five years into his international career, he registered his name as a two time T20 World Champion. He made his place in the West Indies squad in June 2010 against Ireland. In an ODI match against Ireland, He smashed 61 off 34 balls and taking 6 for 42 wickets.

This performance gave him a place in the 2011 World Cup squad. But things did not go as planned for West Indies. It was decided at the beginning that Andre Russell’s talent was better suited for shorter formats. He continued to showcase his performance in ODIs and T20Is. In 2011, just after India won their second World Cup, India toured the West Indies. India won the tour of all three formats but were introduced to their new and strong rival, Andre Russell. In the third ODI, when West Indies lost 7 wickets at just 96 runs, Russell showed his electrifying batting at No. 9 against the newly crowned world champions, India, smashing 92 off 64 balls. India won that match anyway, but Andre Russell made his name famous in the cricket world.

After all these performances, his presence in international cricket was occasional until 2015 against South Africa. He smashed 64 off 40 balls in a chase of 263 with just one wicket left and won the match for West Indies single handedly. Since then, Russell became the key asset for West Indies in shorter formats.

Russell’s Career Halted by Doping Violation

Just as he was peaking, Russell’s career hit an unexpected stop. The Jamaica Anti Doping Commission charged him for not making himself available for drug tests on three occasions in 2015. An offence tantamount to one failed test. An Independent Doping Panel in Jamaica found Russell guilty of a whereabouts clause violation and banned him for a year for most of 2017.

Russell gained global popularity after winning the Player of the Match in IPL 2015. Continuing his exceptional performance, he smashed runs in Big Bash at a strike rate of 186.86 and took 18 wickets in 10 matches, the second highest in the tournament. From BBL to IPL, wherever he went, he won trophies everywhere.

He has been a key player for the national team and he has been part of two World Cup victories. Internationally, he played 84 T20I matches, scoring 1078 runs and taking 61 wickets. In ODI matches, Russell played 56 matches, scoring 1034 runs and taking 70 wickets. He became the fastest to score 1000 runs in his ODI career in just 767 balls. He is a batter who can make the ball scream for mercy.
